Common Practices & Experiences

Everyone is different! You'll see this repeated throughout our website and glossary. Common practices and experiences involving shibari include, but certainly aren't limited to:
  • Taking classes, workshops, or subscribing to video tutorials.
  • Starting with the foundation of learning different knots.
  • Learning knots and then altering them to your own unique tastes.
  • Use of specific types of rope depending on what type of bondage is being planned, and also depending on personal preferences.
  • Having safety shears on hand.
  • Learning safety precautions and specific practices regarding suspension from an experienced party.

Wendie uses colorful rope to tie harnesses with beautiful knots, both on herself and on others.

Carter incorporates decorative knots into harnesses used for rope suspension.
It makes Liam feel very special to be tied up in elaborate knots; like a gift to be unwrapped.

We want your take!

Help us improve the glossary! We're looking for:

  • Anecdotes for kinks in practice, tell us about a scene or an interaction that you feel best illustrates an entry
  • Suggestions for topics to add
  • Short stories to help illustrate each glossary entry - true or fictional stories that demonstrate a topic. (1 page, tops!)
  • Folks who disagree - tell us why we're wrong!

We want to illustrate as many sides of kink as we can to both normalize kink, sexuality, and the diversity within it all, and we can't do that alone!
